
SPECIAL OPERATIONS
Despite being a small department, Los Alamos Police Department provides the community and it's officers with numerous special operations to enhance the training and skill sets for officers and the services provided to Los Alamos County residents and surrounding communities.
Tactical Team
LAPD'S Tactical Team responds to various calls ranging high risk warrant service, to barricaded subjects. The team trains extensively each month and also works with several other departments like New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque Police Department. The team has an armored vehicle BearCat to provide protection to officers and citizens.


Bomb Team
LAPD is the smallest department in the nation with a fully FBI accredited bomb team. The officers assigned to the team respond to calls at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos County, and many surrounding communities. The last decade the team has responded to about 40-50 calls annually.
K9
In late 2023, LAPD acquired Officer Jaskey its first K9 officer in over twenty years. Officer Jaskey is trained on narcotics, tracking, and patrol operations. In 2024, Officer Jaksey was deployed over thirty-five times for the department.


Crash Team
LAPD's crash reconstructionist team responds to fatal crashes and crashes with significant injury. The team uses the latest technology to assist with their investigations from GPS mapping software to vehicle data recorder.
Hostage Negotiation Team
The departments HNT team responds to a variety of calls from citizens dealing with mental health crisis, to barricaded subjects. The members in the team are trained in de-escalation and crisis intervention to provide a safe outcome for everyone on scene.


Firearms Unit
LAPD has several officers that are firearms instructors. The instructors manage the departments annual qualifications and provided advanced training to all officers within the department.
Bike Team
The department's oldest special operation team is the bike team. Officers have been conducting bike patrol for years as normal patrol duties and special assignments within the community and surrounding communities. They also instructor officers from all over the state in police bicycle operations.
